Keeping Houston Healthy
Taking care of patients in crisis mode has been a daily reality for paramedic Chris Scarbrough and his wife Erin, an emergency room nurse and nurse practitioner.
Now, however, they are witnessing firsthand the happier scenario of health care — prevention and wellness. Chris and Erin are Star Wellness franchisees in Houston and they know the difference that a little prevention can make in a person’s life.

The Scarbroughs opened their Houston franchise two years ago and serve an area of Houston north of Interstate 10 as well as the communities of Spring, The Woodlands and Conroe.

“We always wanted our own business and this seemed like the perfect opportunity,” Chris said.

Their ultimate goal, however, is to keep fellow Houstonians out of the emergency room.

“This business is really about helping people getting healthier and discovering health issues before they become major problems, like strokes or heart attacks,” Erin added.

As they make the rounds to businesses and school districts in Houston suburbs with their Star Wellness health screenings and health fairs, the Scarbroughs relish their new preventive roles.

“We’ve alerted people to potential issues as the result of high cholesterol or high glucose readings,” Chris said. “We’ve discovered individuals who were diabetic and didn’t know it, which meant it was going unchecked. A lot of times that can lead to a medical crisis.”

For example, the Scarbroughs are quite confident that the flu shots they administered last fall to local school districts and businesses have kept a lot of people healthy during flu season.

“Unfortunately, most people don’t go to the doctor until they’re sick,” Erin said. “That’s why the ability to take our services to the workplace is so important. It allows people to have the tests or vaccinations they need but, in many cases, keep putting off until it’s too late.”
