Aspiring Phlebotomist and Sonographer Earns $1,500

Mackenzie Dorsha - Star Wellness USA

This year Star Wellness®, a Euless based company that offers onsite medical services, has awarded a college scholarship to a student in the HEB ISD phlebotomy program. The scholarship was not tied to financial need or GPA so all phlebotomy students were eligible to apply.

We are happy to announce Mackenzie Dorsha as this year’s recipient. Inspired by medical issues in her own family, Mackenzie hopes to help save lives with the valuable knowledge she’ll learn while in college. It’s truly an honor to support this outstanding young woman. We asked Mackenzie a few questions by phone. Here are her answers.

What inspired you to enter Sonography as a field?

Well, I knew the teacher really well for a science class I was about to attend. She recommended it to me because I loved anatomy. She persuaded me to go that route. And the first day of class I just fell in love with it.

Is this something you want to do the rest of your life?

Yes. It is.

Where are your from? And what school are you going to be attending now that you’re out of high school?

I’m originally from Jamesville, WI. I moved here 6 years ago for my dad’s job. Then, this Fall, I’m registered to go to Weatherford College.

Are you looking forward to going there?

I am. I’ve already toured the campus there, and registered for all my classes. I’m really excited to go.

What’s your major there?

Right now, it’s General Studies. I have to wait to get into my desired major of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

What was the HEB ISD program  like for you?

Well, it was a great course offered through my High School offered at the Tech Center. And again, that’s the one my teacher had recommended for me since I had her in Principles of Health Science and she knew I wanted to pursue that field.

Was the program something you felt was valuable?

Yeah, I knew it’s was going to help me with sonography. I knew it would be a step up.

What do you hope to do after college?

After that, I’m looking to moving back to Wisconsin. That’s why National Phlebotomy was great for me. I don’t have to retake a certification when I get back to Wisconsin. I’m already covered when I go. That’s where I want to start my career.

What position do you hope to have 5-7 years after completing school?

I’m hoping that one of the more lead Sonographer positions. I kind of want to go back to school so I can do even more in the medical field and help people out as much as possible.

Do you have a specific medical area you want to use sonography?

I’m looking more at cardiovascular because my grandpa had 3 heart attacks so I am interested in the heart.

Does your grandpa’s situation inspire you in your aspirations?

Yes. I want to make sure people are being diagnosed properly, especially last minute when things are actually going wrong. I want to be sure things are handled properly.

Tell me one interesting thing about yourself?

Hold on, let me ask my family really quick and see if they want to answer. (Pauses) I don’t know if you can hear them in the background. My mom says I’m a (Green Bay) Packers fan. I think that’s because I’m walking around with a Packers jersey right now. (Laughs). And my dad says I’m a perfectionist. I don’t know. (Laughs).

Do you have a passion or a hobby you do on the weekends?

I love going to sporting events. Right now, I constantly go to baseball games.

You’re officially done with high school. How does that feel?

I’m beyond excited that I’m done with high school. I’m kind of nervous what to expect, just because I won’t be living at home anymore. But I’m really excited about everything.
